Who is it for?
Wheelchair basketball is one of the most inclusive sports in the world — anyone can play, regardless of whether they use a wheelchair in daily life. All participants use sports wheelchairs during sessions, putting everyone on an equal playing field.
What began as a five-week pilot is now part of the WBA calendar. Wheelchair Hoops sits alongside our player pathways — basketball for all, delivered with Basketball Victoria's Wheelchair Basketball team and GippSport, led by trained coaches, and built around skill development, fun drills, and gameplay to finish every session.
Whether you’re looking to try something new, find a supportive community, reconnect with basketball after an injury, or simply have fun with your family — this program is for you.

Basketball Victoria's Wheelchair Basketball team — the state's peak governing body for the sport — provides the sports wheelchairs, the trained coaches, and the structural backing that makes every session possible.
GippSport stands alongside the program as our regional sport partner, championing inclusive sport participation across Gippsland and helping more locals find their way onto the court.
Frequently asked.
Everything we hear most often — answered.
01 Why are sessions 45 minutes this term instead of an hour?
Two reasons.
First, feedback from our participating members across the pilot and Term 3 supported a sharper, more focused session — and with everyone now arriving from 4:45pm for chair fitting, the full 45 minutes is actual court time, warm-up to final game. Under the old format, setup ate into the hour.
Second, court availability. The Tuesday 5–6pm window sits across two game slots in our summer 2026/27 domestic competition — the busiest part of our week. The shorter session, with domestic teams rotating through the shared timeslot, lets Wheelchair Hoops and the summer season run side by side at the Leisure Centre.
The season fee is unchanged at $95, now across ten sessions instead of eight — so the total court time over the term works out almost identical.
02 Who can participate in wheelchair basketball?
Anyone can participate. Wheelchair basketball is open to people with and without disabilities, and all skill levels are welcome.
03 Do I need to use a wheelchair in daily life to join?
No. Many participants do not use wheelchairs outside of sport. Sports wheelchairs are used during sessions for all players, putting everyone on the same level.
04 Do I need basketball experience?
Not at all. The program is designed for beginners through to more experienced players, with coaches adapting activities to suit everyone.
05 What age groups can join?
The program is open to all ages. We had participants ranging from children to adults at our Come & Try sessions, and the format works brilliantly for everyone.
06 Are sports wheelchairs provided?
Yes, sports wheelchairs are provided for all participants. Feel free to bring your own if you have one!
07 What should I bring to a session?
Comfortable sports clothes, a water bottle, and enclosed shoes. Everything else is provided — just show up ready to have fun.
08 Is wheelchair basketball safe for beginners?
Yes. Sessions are run by trained coaches in a supportive environment, with a focus on skill development, safety, and confidence. It's a welcoming, beginner-friendly space.
09 Can parents, carers, or support workers attend?
Absolutely. Parents, carers, and support workers are welcome to attend and support participants during sessions — and can even have a go themselves if there's enough equipment.
10 How are the sessions structured?
Sessions are a balance of drills and gameplay. Participants will be taught the basics of wheelchair basketball, including fun games, drills, and gameplay to finish off each session.
11 How do I register or find out more?
Register through the PlayHQ portal, or contact Natasha at WBA via tash.billing@warragulbasketball.org.au. You can also reach Basketball Victoria's Wheelchair Basketball team on (03) 9837 8015.
