How divisions work. The Association targets a minimum of six teams per division and will create as many divisions as necessary to deliver an even and balanced competition. Divisions aren’t fixed before the season — they’re built from the teams that enter and the grading results, so no team is stranded in a grade that’s too strong or too weak.

Melbourne Cup week: games will be played on Monday 2 November 2026 as normal. Teams are asked to confirm early whether they can play, so any scheduling changes can be made in good time — and if your team needs to forfeit, please notify WBA as early as possible so games can be scheduled to minimise the impact on referees and venues. Exact game times are released via PlayHQ 24 hours prior to game day, and games may occasionally be re-scheduled based on referee availability or special events — changes are communicated to team contacts.
How it works
3-Stage Competition Model.
Our Summer senior competition uses the same structured three-stage model as the junior competition — designed to deliver fairer grading, better matches and stronger divisions. Rather than locking divisions on day one, the season opens with a grading phase that gives every team the chance to find the right level.
Refined for Summer 2026/27. The 3-Stage model was first piloted during the Winter 2026 season. Following the pilot, the Association undertook a formal review — in consultation with senior competition stakeholders and informed by community feedback. Modifications have been made to address competitiveness concerns identified during the pilot, and this refined model is what runs for Summer 2026/27 across both junior and senior competitions.

Assess team strength and establish an initial grading position through mini-game matchups.

Introducing Senior Mixed.
A brand-new mixed senior competition on Sunday evenings from 5:00pm — social-competitive basketball for teams of mates, partners and colleagues. Team registrations are open now.
Senior Mixed is exactly what the name suggests — a mixed competition where every team fields a mix of male and female players, with a maximum of two male players on the court at any one time. There’s no minimum number of male players — an all-female lineup is fine — and you can play with four, provided no more than two are male.
It sits alongside our Mens and Womens competitions for players who want something more social, less rigid, and inherently inclusive. One grade, no Mens-vs-Womens split, and a Sunday-evening slot that suits people with full-time jobs, families, and weekends already booked.
The competition is going ahead — get your team in. Games start at 5:00pm, and depending on how many teams register we may add a second timeslot at 6:00pm. The more teams we get, the better the competition.

Section 20 · Rule Variations
How Mixed is different.
Senior Mixed is played under the same WBA Senior Domestic Playing Conditions as every other senior competition — FIBA rules, uniforms, timing, forfeits, finals, conduct and the Zero Tolerance Policy all apply as normal. Only these things change.
Team composition
A maximum of two male players on the court at any one time. You can start or continue with four players, as long as no more than two are male. There is no minimum number of male players — an all-female lineup is fine.
Fielding a third male in live play is a Technical Foul (2 free throws + possession) and the extra player must be substituted immediately.The keyway restriction
The key is gender-restricted at both ends while the ball is live. First half: female players only. Second half (and any overtime): male players only. During dead balls, anyone can stand anywhere.
Switched off for free throws — normal FIBA lane positions apply regardless of gender.Keyway breaches
Attacking player in the restricted key: violation — any basket doesn’t count, throw-in to the opposition. Defending player: violation — but if the attacking team scores, the basket counts and play goes on. A defender can never gain from standing in the restricted key.
Repeated or deliberate breaches may be penalised as a Technical Foul.Size 6 ball
All Mixed Competition matches are played with a Size 6 basketball.
Fill-in players
The normal fill-in rules apply — register with the GDO, photo ID, maximum 2 games. One addition: a fill-in can’t take the court if it would put more than two men on. As Mixed is a single grade, the usual grade restrictions on fill-ins don’t apply.
Gender recognition
Gender is recognised under Basketball Victoria’s gender diversity and participant inclusion policies. Any eligibility question goes to Association Operations before game night. Nobody may challenge a player’s gender at a venue — not the referee, not the GDO, not the opposing team.
Losing your legal mix mid-game. If injuries or foul-outs mean continuing would force more than two men on court, the game is a default — as with running out of players in any senior game. If the opposition is ahead the score stands; if you’re ahead it’s recorded 20–0 to them. The defaulting team gets 1 premiership point, the winners 3. Both captains and the referee can agree to keep playing socially — the recorded result doesn’t change, and all conduct rules still apply. Can’t field a legal team at the start? That’s a forfeit: 20–0, no points, standard fees. Let operations@warragulbasketball.org.au know more than 24 hours out to avoid the fee.
Conduct rules apply in full, without variation. The Zero Tolerance Policy, warnings, Behavioural Technical Fouls, the points accumulation system and the protections for junior (green whistle / green lanyard) referees all apply exactly as in every other WBA senior competition. Mixed is designed to be fun, social and inclusive — play hard, but play respectfully.

Section 20 — Mixed Competition
20.1 Application of these Playing Conditions
The WBA Senior Mixed Competition is conducted under the current Official FIBA Basketball Rules (as adopted by Basketball Victoria) and the WBA Senior Domestic Playing Conditions, except as varied by this Section 20.
Where any inconsistency arises between this Section 20 and any other provision of these Playing Conditions, this Section 20 prevails for the Mixed Competition.
All conduct provisions — including the Zero Tolerance Policy (Section 12), the BTF Framework (Section 12.4), and the Points Accumulation System (Section 12.6) — apply in full to the Mixed Competition without variation.
20.2 Player Gender — Recognition
For the purposes of this Section 20, a player’s gender is recognised in accordance with Basketball Victoria’s current gender diversity and participant inclusion policies, available on the BV website.
Any question regarding a player’s eligibility to be counted as a male or female player for composition purposes must be directed to Association Operations, who will determine the matter in accordance with the applicable Basketball Victoria policy. Such questions must not be raised or determined courtside. A Game Day Official (GDO), referee, or opposing team may not challenge a player’s gender at a venue under any circumstances.
20.3 Team Composition
20.3.1 A maximum of two (2) male players may be on the court for a team at any one time.
20.3.2 A team may commence or continue a match with four (4) players, provided no more than two (2) of those players are male. The minimum player provisions of Section 10.5 otherwise apply.
20.3.3 The Game Day Official (GDO) will verify each team’s on-court composition at the scoring iPad/sheet before the commencement of the game as part of their duties under Section 13.1.
Penalty: A team that fields more than two (2) male players on the court at any time during live play concedes a Technical Foul (TF) under Section 12.3, and the excess player(s) must be immediately substituted. A team unable to commence the game with a compliant composition is subject to the forfeit provisions of Section 20.7.
20.4 Basketball
All Mixed Competition matches shall be played using a Size 6 basketball.
20.5 Keyway Restriction
20.5.1 For the purposes of this Section, the keyway is the rectangular lane bounded by the endline, the lane lines, and the free throw line. The boundary lines form part of the keyway. The restriction applies to the keyway at both ends of the court.
20.5.2 During the first half, only female players may enter or remain within either keyway while the ball is live.
20.5.3 During the second half, only male players may enter or remain within either keyway while the ball is live.
20.5.4 In any extra time period played under Section 9.3, the second-half restriction applies.
20.5.5 The restriction applies only while the ball is live. It does not apply during any dead-ball situation.
20.5.6 Free throws: The keyway restriction does not apply during a free throw situation, from the moment the ball is at the disposal of the free throw shooter until the final free throw is completed and rebounded, or the ball otherwise becomes dead. Free throw lane positions are taken in accordance with the Official FIBA Basketball Rules regardless of gender.
20.5.7 Attacking violation: An attacking player who enters or remains within the restricted keyway while the ball is live commits a violation. Any basket scored during the violation does not count. The ball is awarded to the opposing team for a throw-in from the point nearest the violation.
20.5.8 Defensive violation: A defending player who enters or remains within the restricted keyway while the ball is live commits a violation. If the offensive team scores during the violation, the basket counts and the violation is disregarded. In all other cases, the ball is awarded to the offensive team for a throw-in from the point nearest the violation.
20.5.9 Repeated or deliberate breaches: Repeated or deliberate breaches of the keyway restriction by any player may be penalised as a Technical Foul (TF) under Section 12.3 (2 free throws + possession, 1 accumulation point). Where the referee considers the breaches also constitute dissent or disrespect toward officials, the BTF provisions of Section 12 apply.
20.6 Fill-in Players
The fill-in provisions of Section 10 apply to the Mixed Competition, subject to the following:
20.6.1 A fill-in player may not take the court where doing so would cause the team to exceed two (2) male players on the court at any one time.
20.6.2 The Mixed Competition is conducted as a single grade. The grade-restriction provisions of Section 10.2 therefore do not apply; all other fill-in provisions (including the 2-game maximums, GDO registration, and photo ID requirements under Sections 10.3 and 10.4) apply in full.
20.6.3 Should the Mixed Competition be divided into grades in a future season, the grade-restriction provisions of Section 10.2 will apply within the Mixed Competition from the commencement of that season, and this will be communicated to clubs in advance.
20.7 Loss of Required Composition — Forfeit and Default
20.7.1 Before the game: A team unable to field a compliant composition (minimum four (4) players, no more than two (2) male) at game time is subject to the forfeit provisions of Section 14.3. The result is recorded 20–0, the forfeiting team receives no premiership points, and the winning team receives three (3) premiership points.
20.7.2 During the game: Where a team can no longer maintain the required composition during a game — including due to injury, disqualification, or a player fouling out — such that continuing would require more than two (2) male players on the court, the team loses by default under Section 14.4. If the non-defaulting team is ahead, the score stands. If the defaulting team is ahead, the opponents win 20–0. The defaulting team receives one (1) premiership point; the winning team receives three (3) premiership points.
20.7.3 Unofficial continuation: By mutual agreement of both team captains and the referee, play may continue as an unofficial fixture after a default is declared under 20.7.2. The recorded result remains as determined under 20.7.2 regardless of the outcome of the unofficial play. All conduct provisions of Section 12 continue to apply during any unofficial play.
20.7.4 Finals eligibility crediting for forfeited and defaulted games is governed by Section 14.5.
20.8 Spirit of the Competition
The WBA Mixed Competition is designed to provide a fun, inclusive, and social basketball experience while promoting meaningful participation by all players. Participants are expected to compete respectfully and uphold the spirit of the competition at all times. Conduct contrary to the spirit of the competition may be dealt with under Section 12.11.2.

How are divisions decided?
The Association targets a minimum of six teams per division and creates as many divisions as necessary for an even, balanced competition. Divisions aren’t fixed in advance — they’re shaped from the teams that enter and the results of the grading rounds, so every team ends up at a level where games are genuinely competitive.
What is the 3-Stage Competition Model?
Seniors use the same three-stage approach as the junior competition for fairer draws. Stage 1 — Grade (Rounds 1–2): mini-games only, used to assess team strength; no ladder. Stage 2 — Validate (Rounds 3–5): full games begin; official ladder starts; grading adjustments can still be made after each round. Stage 3 — Season (Rounds 6–15): divisions are locked; every result counts; finals eligibility applies. The model was piloted in Winter 2026 and refined for Summer 2026/27 following a formal review with senior competition stakeholders and community feedback.
How does the finals series work?
The top 4 teams in each division qualify for finals. Semi-Finals are played on Monday 15 March 2027 (1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd), with winners advancing to the Grand Final on Monday 22 March 2027. Finals are played in the same locked divisions as Stage 3. There is no home-court advantage — venues are allocated based on competition needs.
Senior Mixed
What is Senior Mixed and when does it run?
Senior Mixed is a new, inclusive mixed competition playing Sunday evenings from 5:00pm. Every team fields a mix of male and female players, with a maximum of two male players on the court at any one time — you can play with four, provided no more than two are male, and an all-female lineup is fine. It’s a single social-competitive grade with a Top-4 finals series. Team registrations are open now — see the Senior Mixed section above.
What time do Senior Mixed games start?

Where are the Senior Mixed Playing Conditions?
Mixed is played under the WBA Senior Domestic Playing Conditions — the same document as every other senior competition — together with the Section 20 Mixed alterations. There is no separate Mixed conditions document: the Section 20 alterations are published in full on this page, in Section 20 — Mixed Competition, with a plain-language summary in How Mixed is different above. You can also download the Senior Playing Conditions for everything else.
Will Senior Mixed be graded into divisions?
The intention is a single grade — one social-competitive competition, all skill levels together. We’ll only grade into divisions if team numbers make it necessary to keep the competition even. If that happens, the usual fill-in grade restrictions would start applying within Mixed, and we’d tell clubs in advance.
Do Senior Mixed fees differ from Mens & Womens?
No — the fees are exactly the same as the Mens and Womens competitions. Registration is per player through your team’s PlayHQ link, plus the Basketball Victoria Annual Participation Licence if you don’t already hold a current one. See the fees section for the amounts.
I don’t have a team — can I still play?
Registration is by team, but if you’re an individual looking for a side, email kate.collins@warragulbasketball.org.au and we’ll do our best to connect you with captains who are still recruiting.
Fees & Behaviour
Have fees changed for this season?
No — fees are unchanged for Summer 2026/27. Senior registration is per player, paid through the team’s PlayHQ link once the team is registered. The Annual Participation Licence (APL) is managed by Basketball Victoria; if you played last season your licence may already be active — check with your team contact before paying.
What is the Behavioural Management Framework?
The BMF applies across both junior and senior competitions. A behavioural technical foul resulting in ejection carries an automatic one-game suspension from the following round; abusive spectators are issued a formal warning card as the first step of a clear escalation process, up to venue ejection if the behaviour continues. It exists to keep a safe, respectful environment for every player, coach, official and spectator.

The WBA’s Behavioural Management Framework applies across both Junior and Senior competitions. Our goal is a safe, respectful environment for every player, coach, official, and spectator.
Spectator warning cards
Spectators who are abusive toward game officials will be issued a formal warning card — the first step in a clear, consistent escalation process.
Escalation & venue ejection
If abusive behaviour continues after a warning card, a team/bench technical foul will be awarded, followed by ejection from the venue if the behaviour does not cease.
