About the initiative

Sport at school, for life beyond it.

Sporting Schools is an Australian Government initiative designed to help schools increase children's participation in sport and connect them with community sport opportunities. Programs are provided free to children and their families, helping students build the confidence and capability to be active for life.

Research shows that quality sport and physical activity in schools has a positive influence on children's confidence, competence and motivation to be active — at school and throughout their life.

To make it happen, the Australian Sports Commission partners with Basketball Australia and more than 40 other national sporting organisations, including national sporting organisations for people with disability. Basketball's delivery features two nationally accredited programs — Ford Aussie Hoops for primary students and 3X3 Basketball for secondary students — run by NSO-endorsed coaches or registered teachers.

Beyond the sessions themselves, the programs are built to boost physical activity and help students transition into local community sporting clubs — which is exactly where WBA and our affiliated clubs come in.

Sporting Schools aligns to the Play Well Sport Participation Strategy through Priority Area 2 — embedding a culture of sport in and around schools to drive lifelong involvement.

Program objectives

Six things Sporting Schools sets out to do.

Engage primary students

Engage Years 7–8

Targeted secondary programs — particularly for inactive students, girls, and schools in disadvantaged areas.

Build school–sport partnerships

Connecting sporting organisations with schools to promote involvement in sport outside school hours.

Develop schools & teachers

Growing the capability of schools and teachers to give students positive sport experiences.

Build the coaching workforce

Support lifelong activity

Backing life-long involvement in sport and physical activity to enhance health and wellbeing.

Two programs

Primary and secondary.

Primary

Ford Aussie Hoops

Basketball's nationally accredited entry program for primary students — fun, skills-first sessions run at school by NSO-endorsed coaches or registered teachers, designed to make first experiences of basketball positive ones.

Secondary · Years 7–8

3X3 Basketball

The fast, half-court format for high schoolers — a nationally accredited program targeting Year 7 and 8 students, with priority for inactive students, girls, and students attending schools in disadvantaged areas.

Beyond the funding round

WBA delivers direct to your school.

You don't need to wait for a funding round to talk to us. Warragul Basketball Association works directly with any school — primary or secondary — to design and deliver a basketball program that fits your students, your timetable and your space. We've already delivered Ford Aussie Hoops in a local primary school through Sporting Schools, and we can bring the same to yours.

Ford Aussie Hoops

Basketball's accredited primary program, delivered in-school — the exact program we've already run for a local primary school.

3X3 Basketball

The accredited secondary program — fast, half-court, three-a-side, built for Year 7 and 8 energy and small gym spaces.

Wheelchair basketball

Inclusive come-and-try sessions delivered with our Basketball Victoria partnership — chairs provided.

Basketball clinics

Custom skills sessions run by accredited WBA coaches — in your gym, on your courts, during PE or lunchtime.

Funding & eligibility

How schools apply.

Sporting Schools funding is applied for by the school — primary schools can apply for grant funding each term to cover the cost of the program. Application windows, eligibility criteria and the funding process are managed by the Australian Sports Commission, with full details, dates and criteria on the Sport Australia website.
