Come & Try Clinic

9:00am – 10:30am 90 minutes

For girls who are new to basketball, or who have only played a little. The session covers the fundamentals — dribbling, passing, shooting and playing as a team — in a relaxed, encouraging environment where nobody is expected to already know how.

  • Ball handling and dribbling basics
  • Passing, catching and shooting technique
  • Small-sided games and team play
  • Led by experienced female coaches

Best for: she has never played, has only done a school clinic, or is curious but nervous about walking into a stadium.

Skill Development Clinic

10:30am – 12:30pm 2 hours

For girls who are currently playing or have some prior basketball experience. A longer, higher-tempo session that sharpens existing skills and pushes decision-making, game craft and confidence under pressure.

  • Advanced ball handling and finishing
  • Shooting mechanics and repetition
  • Reading the game and decision-making
  • Competitive drills and live play

Best for: she plays domestic or representative basketball, or has played before and wants to get sharper.

WHAT SHE TAKES HOME

she leaves with her own ball.

Cost and equipment are two of the biggest reasons girls never start. Every participant walks out with the gear to keep playing — at no charge.

A t-shirt

United for Her clinic tee, hers to keep.

A basketball

So the practice keeps going in the driveway.

A drink bottle

Bring it back for every session after this one.

A sports bra

For participants aged 9 and over.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

more than a clinic. a commitment.

United for Her is Melbourne United's statewide initiative to break down the barriers that keep women and girls out of basketball — cost, confidence, transport, and the simple feeling of not knowing whether you belong on the court.

It runs free clinics, coaching workshops and leadership seminars right across Victoria, led by experienced female coaches, with equipment supplied so that a first session can turn into a second one. The program is supported by the Australian Government through Play Our Way.

Warragul Basketball Association is hosting the Warragul clinic. Every girl in our region is welcome — whether she plays for one of our affiliated clubs, or has never picked up a ball.

QUESTIONS

the things parents actually ask.

Does my daughter need to have played basketball before?

No. The Come & Try Clinic is built specifically for girls who are new to the game or have very limited experience. The Skill Development Clinic assumes she is currently playing or has played before.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no cost to participate, and every girl receives equipment to take home. You do need to register in advance, because places are limited.

Does she have to be a Warragul Basketball Association member?

No. The clinic is open to every girl in the region regardless of whether she is registered with WBA, plays for one of our affiliated clubs, or has never played anywhere.

She is 11 (or 12) — which session should she do?

Use experience as the tiebreaker. If she is new to basketball, put her in Come & Try even if she is 12. If she is 11 and already playing domestic, Skill Development will suit her better. If you would like a hand deciding, email tash.billing@warragulbasketball.org.au.

Can she do both sessions?

The two clinics are designed for different age groups and experience levels, so pick the one that fits. Register for one.

What does she need to bring?

A drink bottle for the day, court shoes and comfortable clothes she can move in. The t-shirt, basketball, drink bottle and — for participants aged 9 and over — sports bra are all provided.

Who is running the sessions?

The clinics are delivered by Melbourne United's United for Her program, led by experienced female coaches, with Warragul Basketball Association hosting at Warragul Leisure Centre.

Can I stay and watch?

Yes. Parents and carers are welcome to stay at the stadium for the session.

Where exactly is it?

Warragul Leisure Centre, 21 Burke St, Warragul VIC 3820. Check-in is at the stadium entrance.

What happens after the clinic?

If she enjoys it, there is somewhere for her to go next — Ford Aussie Hoops for the youngest players, junior domestic competition through one of our eight affiliated clubs, or the Future Warriors Academy. We will point you in the right direction on the day.
