Warragul Basketball Association (WBA) has partnered with Melbourne United to bring the NBL club’s United for Her program to Gippsland, with a free girls-only basketball clinic at Warragul Leisure Centre on Wednesday 23 September 2026.
Two sessions will run across the morning: a Come & Try Clinic for girls aged 6–11 from 9:00am to 10:30am, followed by a Skill Development Clinic for girls aged 12–18 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Both sessions are led by experienced female coaches from Melbourne United’s United for Her program, and both are completely free.
Every participant will take home a United for Her t-shirt, a basketball, a drink bottle and — for girls aged nine and over — a sports bra, ensuring cost and equipment are not the reasons a first session never turns into a second.
Places are limited and registration is essential.
CLOSING THE GAP FOR GIRLS IN GIPPSLAND
While basketball continues to grow across the region, participation among girls still lags well behind boys. WBA sees the United for Her clinic as a practical step toward changing that — lowering the barriers of cost, confidence and access that stop many girls from ever stepping onto a court.
“We’re genuinely excited to be collaborating with Melbourne United and bringing a free, girls-only clinic to Gippsland. The reality is that girls’ numbers in our sport still don’t rival the boys’, and that’s something we’re determined to change. WBA is a strong advocate for creating pathways and opportunities that grow female participation at every level — from a six-year-old picking up a ball for the first time, to a teenager pushing toward representative basketball. United for Her gives girls in our region a day designed entirely around them, led by female coaches, with nothing standing in their way. That’s exactly the kind of opportunity we want to keep bringing to Warragul.” — Dave Thomas, General Manager, Warragul Basketball Association
TWO CLINICS, ONE MORNING
Come & Try Clinic — Girls 6–11 | 9:00am – 10:30am Designed for girls who are new to basketball or have only played a little. The 90-minute session covers the fundamentals — dribbling, passing, shooting and playing as a team — in a relaxed, encouraging environment where nobody is expected to already know how.
Skill Development Clinic — Girls 12–18 | 10:30am – 12:30pm For girls currently playing or with prior basketball experience. A longer, higher-tempo two-hour session focused on advanced ball handling, shooting mechanics, decision-making and competitive live play.
Parents choosing a session for a girl aged 11 or 12 are encouraged to use experience as the tiebreaker: newer players should register for Come & Try, while those already playing domestic basketball will be better suited to Skill Development.
ABOUT UNITED FOR HER
United for Her is Melbourne United’s statewide initiative to break down the barriers that keep women and girls out of basketball — cost, confidence, transport, and the feeling of not knowing whether they belong on the court. The program delivers free clinics, coaching workshops and leadership seminars across Victoria, led by experienced female coaches, with equipment supplied to every participant. United for Her is supported by the Australian Government through Play Our Way.
